Top 10 things you should know to travel with your pet to Costa Rica and back

Like alot of people today, they want to travel with their pets for vacation, or to move or retire.

Here is what I have learned from taking my Yorkie to Costa Rica for last few years.

  1. Download current documents required for Costa Rica from USDA-APHIS Veterinary Service
  2. Contact your airline for any specific forms to travel with the airlines and time frames
  3. Important paperwork normally needs to be signed by USDA-APHIS within two weeks of travel
  4. Contact your local veterinarian and request an International Health Certificate. The form usually requires, information about last rabies vaccination. In addition, the vet will need to treat for internal parasite (heart worms) and external parasite (fleas and ticks), usually in small treat pill.
  5. FEDEX the document signed by your vet to the USDA-APHIS that is the jurisdiction for your state (found on website). You must also provide a pre-paid return label to receive your certified form.
  6. Make two copies of certified form and two copies of rabies vaccination
  7. Keep the documents with your passport to keep it safe.
  8. Present documents at Costa Rica Immigration. If stay is more than 30 days, they will keep the document and must get a new one before you return to the USA from a Costa Rica vet. If stay is less than 30 days, immigration will stamp the document and can be used on the return flight.
  9. On return, present the Health Form to immigration they will check the date to make sure its valid
  10. Return to the USA and declare that you have a pet with you. Again present your documentation plus your pets rabies vaccination history

The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me! ¡Pura Vida! Costa Rica Lifestyle. … Simply translated, it means “simple life” or “pure life”, but in Costa Rica, it is more than just a saying—it is a way of life. Costa Ricans (Ticos) use this term to say hello, to say goodbye, to say everything’s great, to say everything’s cool.

My favorite beaches

Jacó is a beautiful, energetic beach town that’s located within 1.5 hours of Costa Rica’s capital and is known for its carefree beach town feel. Airport code is SJO.

There are multiple properties available through Airbnb.

My favorites are Bahia Encantada. Great condo on beach with swim up bar and pool. Right beside Crocs Resort.

Also close to all bars and restaurants is Vista Las Palmas. High tower condo on beach.

Tamirindo is a great surf town which is closer to the Liberia International Airport which is Airport code LIR. About 45 minutes car ride from airport to Tamirindo.

Recommendation by far is https://www.tamarindodiria.com/ great resort right in the middle of the town. Also multiple Airbnbs as well.

Hot Springs

Every trip to costa rica should include a relaxing time at the multiple hot springs in La Fortuna/Arenal area.

My favorites include

Baldi Hot Springs https://www.baldihotsprings.cr/ great with friends, has water slides, swim up bars. Lots of international guests.

Tabacon https://www.tabacon.com/ great for romantic time as a couple or group of couples. Little more expensive, but has a great buffet as well.

Another option is the Springs Resort and spa http://www.thespringscostarica.com/ great place for weddings, and options for large groups of friends and family to stay in multi bedroom accommodations.
